About Me

My name is Shane Buckingham and I'm 32 years old. I was in an accident, where I was knocked off my bicycle whilst on my way to work. I was riding downhill and went through a green light at a junction, a driver turned into the side of me, because they hadn’t noticed me, which knocked me off my bike and, as far as I’m aware, I landed on the road and the back of my head hit the curb.

An ambulance came to me and I was unconscious. They used my phone to call my fiancée and she picked my bike up and then came to A&E.  The hospital said I could be out within 72 hours, but then that night I had a seizure which increased the complications of my accident. I was kept in Queens medical centre hospital for 1 week and then transferred for rehabilitation at Lindon lodge, city hospital, for a further 3 weeks.

Due to the injury I incurred, I have no memory of this, but this is what I was told. Although I don’t remember this, it has become a part of my life story.

My first memory of my situation was after being in Lindon lodge for 2 weeks and I still can't really say what happened. When I got out my life was so different, I was in pain all the time with horrible headaches, my balance was bad, I was tired all the time and I really didn't feel like "shane" anymore

In the last 2 years since my accident I’ve had ongoing appointments with doctors and experts around the country in regards to several diagnoses, which include Epilepsy, Anxiety, Depression, Fatigue, Memory problems and balance issues.

With all the changes in my life, it makes me feel weak. I am now scared of a lot more than I was prior to my accident making aspects of my day to day life, such as engaging in social activities and crossing roads terrifying.

Although my brain injury is a continuous struggle, I’ve found a way to help reduce this suffering.

So…Welcome to my world, where I’m wanting to show everybody the random thoughts I have running through my head. Since my accident, I have learnt my own way around using different techniques to help me express my thoughts and feelings by sharing what I love to do, which is creating my art.
